Making the search box "more obvious"

A client wants the search feature to be “more obvious.” https://thebitcoin.pub/ uses a plugin to do this:

Is there some CSS/non-plugin way to do something similar? (They’re on a hosted plan where plugins are not allowed).

“search” is a really hard thing to search for.
