Onebox for Instagram Reels

I don’t know if this is a bug, because I can barely find mention of Reels, short of 102 and 103 here.

Regardless, here I go – we went through the steps in How to obtain an App Token to allow Instagram Oneboxes and succeeded.

But I was deficient in my testing, which @deb_mitchell figured out – it was actually just any https://www.instagram.com/p/ (photo) or https://www.instagram.com/tv/ (IGTV) URLs that worked.

While https://www.instagram.com/reel/ URLs (Reels) deliver a screenshot from the video and nothing more (no way to play it or get to it on Instagram).

For example:

Has anyone looked into this? Should it work, or are Reels a completely different beast?

@Falco I took the link you added to my post, which was the same URL, but with “p” instead of “reel” and that worked. It also works if you swap “tv” in for “reel”.

Not really a solution for non-admins or for when we have more volume, so we still want to figure out how to automate it. But it’s a workaround for now and just generally worth noting.

Great to hear that. It’s a trick I learned helping my family yt-dlp reels from Instagram.

It’s just /reel/ that needs to be replaced and – while it doesn’t seem to matter either way – both /tv/ and /p/ will work as a replacement.

I’m experiencing this issue on my forum as well where oneboxing Instagram reels is used quite frequently, but I don’t understand what a PR is? Does that mean it’s in the pipeline for a fix?

It just git lingo (if you don’t know what git and site named GitHub means, well… google is your friend, but it is one way to do version control) and pr is shortening for pull request.

Basically it means that the core team has no time, resources or will to code that functionality, but they are accepting that fix from someone else who is willing to do it.

Youtube "short" videos type embedding/oneboxing not working

Hi! Youtube video embedding works on my forums, but not short videos (those with /shorts/ in the URL) like this one: [20200123 145440] The onebox request returns a 404 error. [image] Regular youtube video embedding works. I don’t encounter this issue on try.discourse or meta. I suppose it comes from a site setting not properly configured. Any clue?

The real issue is that even a how-to of embedding Instagram fails nowadays. So I’m not totally sure if simple url manipulation from /reels/ to /p/ is enough.

I guess Facebook now only allows oembed to verified business accounts. However, I can use instagram reels videos on my other site without creating any facebook application and without asking for oembed permission. Why is this necessary in Discourse?
