Renaming Tags: Consequences

I would like to confirm something:

If we rename a tag, let’s say there was a spelling mistake devopment and I want to edit and change to development what happens to all the topics the original tag was attached to?

Are they updated to use the renamed tag? If not, what is the best way to go about this to cause the least “damage.”?

Renaming a tag from the tag wrench will update the name for all the existing tags on your topics as well. :+1: There shouldn’t be any adverse effects.

ETA: Though if you use the Tag Icons theme component then you will need to update the relevant record in there with the updated spelling to get the icon to show up. I think this one caught me out before. :slight_smile:

Thanks for the reply. We definitely do not have that theme in use.

One final question regarding renaming:
if a tag is linked between 2 separate categories, will renaming in one category mess up the links to the other one?

I need to rephrase this: if we have a sub-category that links to the main category and I rename the tags in the main category, will the tags in the sub-category also be renamed or do I need to do those separately?

Renaming/editing tags is always forum wide action. Categories, topics, PM… everything use same tag all the time.

As Jagster said, editing the tag name will update the displayed tag name everywhere that tag is used. :+1:

Though if you’re looking for more peace of mind then I think setting up a test tag you can have a play with can be really helpful so you can see it in action before you commit to making any changes to your actual live tags.
