so i noticed, since almost about 2 versions ago, that when you install discourse, go through the process of activating the link sent by email, as soon as you arrive to your newly created discourse the “skip on-boarding (modal)” is impossible to close unless you click skip, (if you try clicking any link, it reappears) and since clicking skip will have you not getting badges AND since new users that don’t know much about discourse will miss on receiving badges unless I (as an admin) tell them to turn off the “Skip new user onboarding tips and badges” …
probably that’s something that should look into. I (as an admin) would like to not have the need to go through the process of having to let users know that they need to turn it off
Are you saying that this affects all users, or only the user who has installed Discourse and responds to the activation email? After creating a regular user account on https://try.discourse.org/, I’m not having any trouble closing the modal:
What happens when you click the “Skip these tips” link? Does the overlay get removed from the page?
When I test this on my own site, I can remove the overlay either by clicking the “Skip these tips” link, or by clicking my avatar. I think this is the expected behaviour.
if you click the users icon which is what the overlay is pointing you at, after clicking it in order to continue, the modal reappears once again and does not close unless you click skip these steps to dismiss it
Thanks for the details. I’m not able to reproduce that on my own site. If your site isn’t running the latest Discourse code, it’s possible that updating to the latest will fix the issue for you. It is also possible that something in your site’s theme is causing the issue.
I’ll test this out on https://try.discourse.org/ again tomorrow to make sure it’s working correctly there.
I’ve just tested this again and am not finding any issues with dismissing the overlay. Possibly the issue is related to your browser or operating system. I’m testing this with the latest version of Chrome on Ubuntu. What operating system and browser are you using?
If you get a chance, could you try creating an account on https://try.discourse.org/ and let us know if the issue happens for you on that site?
i think what was causing this was one of my firefox extensions as i tried on https://try.discourse.org and also creating a test account on my testing forum with a different browser (brave) and couldn’t repro it
Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve deleted the post. I’m not aware of this having come up before, but since new content on that site is cleared once per day, we’re unlikely to catch issues like that. Maybe we should be using watched words on our sandbox site to flag and hide posts with that sort of content.
