Not on base Discourse, no. You need a custom plugin for that, as they have stated.

My point is these customisations are possible, but apparently not implemented by Replit. It’s up to the admins of Replit to implement them.
If you want a live example, look at: https://www.starzen.space for an example of Thumbnails and Excerpts in the Topic List. These have been explicitly added by adding a Theme Component and a Plugin. A task carried out by the admin of the site (in this case … me!).
Each Discourse instance can be uniquely configured, so not all of them have the same extensions added to them.
The point is “Thumbnail of Topic” is already possible, it just needs to be configured.

It requires a combination of the TLP theme component and it’s corresponding plugin.
