I’ve just had a quick repro attempt on my test site but the new tag + description onebox is working for me. But… I have been lazy and not updated for awhile (1a5377cf93).
Let me update and try again, and then if it doesn’t work on a second test then we can at least rifle through the intervening commits and maybe narrow down if something has happened in the interim.
After updating (8f89e287d3) and attempting again (both with an existing tag + new description as well as a new tag + description) it all seems to be working fine. The tag link oneboxes on another site with the tag description included.
@Damian_Boon Is this happening for all of your new tag descriptions or only some?
OK, great! So it appears there are some replicable problems here which is good. That will help engineers hopefully with finding the source of the problem!
I am moving this to Bug and slapping staff-experience on it so the staff experience team can take a look when they get a chance.
“Horcott-lakes” does not work correctly - the onebox description is the default, as though there is no description specified. But when you visit the page you see the description is specified. On that page though the meta description does not correctly show the description but rather <meta name="description" content="Topics tagged horcott-lakes"> . https://forum.carptalk.org/tag/horcott-lakes
Here on meta none of the tag oneboxes we’ve tried is working at all here in this topic - just the URL is displaying. e.g. https://meta.discourse.org/tag/release-notes has a description that you can see on the page.
The expected behavior is that in all these cases the onebox will show and also contain the description specified for the tag.
Correct but i don’t see why we can’t have 2 options on the tag edit page - one for Meta Title and one for Meta description - same for categories. I can prove that we would be losing out on 100k+ uniques a month traffic wise, all discourse users would benefit from this and see a huge traffic increase as tags are some of the most important when users are Googling. My other site which I showed you has literally no h1 tag or text on the page (just lists of results) on the tags and generates 20k+ unique visitors a month
I believe you but we have to take baby steps here. For this topic let’s work on identifying if there is a bug with the existing tag description functionality and try to get that fixed up.
