The notifications tab under my profile icon at the top right shows all notifications, regardless of how old they are or whether I have read them. Is there any way to make that show only unread notifications?

You can’t filter them directly when you press your profile picture but if you press the bell icon it takes you to notifications where you can filter notifications by read and unread. What you are describing isn’t possible at the moment.
Are you suggesting that the notifications should be cleared/empty when you have read everything you’ve been notified about? Why would you want to do that? Is it because you don’t want to be distracted by them, or for some other reason?
Notifications are highlighted when you have not clicked on them yet or looked at what the notification is about. Then once you’ve handled them they are no longer highlighted but still listed. Personally I think this is great because it gives you ready access to recent discussions you have been involved in.
I guess it wasn’t obvious for me that unread notifications would be highlighted. If I am looking at a list of notifications and all have been read, then that point isn’t obvious.
