Why does updating the owner bump the topic to the top

When I’m updating the owner of the topic, why does it bump up to the top on the latest page? Is there a way to prevent it?

Amazingly, this request goes back to 2017:

Sadly, there was no response there.

I believe the reason for this is that changing the ownership counts as an edit to the topic post. IIRC if there are replies then the topic won’t bump, only those topics with the topic posts and no replies bump.

I suppose you could hide the edit and reset bump date? Not 100% sure if that’ll work, though.

So can I hide edits directly in the site settings? For all universal users and topics?

Hmm… the thing is, I tested changing the topic ownership (with no replies), and the topic didn’t bump.

In my case it does. It comes to the top of the page.

There is a site setting of who can see edit revision pencil in a post. However I don’t believe it is tied to the bumping. But could be wrong.

I adjusted this setting due to some users flagging a post where the author realized their initial post was a bit toxic and edited their post accordingly. Self moderation.

The member who flagged the post even responded:

“I see you edited your post. However I am flagging it, as I can see what you posted originally.”

Just for a bit of extra context - if you change ownership as the first edit to the post then it won’t bump, but if it’s the second+ edit then it will bump.

(And if the topic has a reply then no bump at all as the first post will no longer be the last post)

But for these you can Reset Bump Date afterwards to slide them back down into their original position again (either individually from the topic wrench or en masse using the Bulk Actions)

Thanks a lot, was not sure bulk actions can reset bump time and date too, finally I don’t have to do it manually for all topics.
