Why was subdirectory support removed?

I have an EV SSL certificate that is only valid for two domains (with and without www), not all subdomains. It’d be nice if I could run Discourse with this certificate but it’d require running as a subdirectory on the main site (www.example.com/forum). I saw that this feature used to exist but was removed. Why is that? Is it really so hard to support an arbitrary base URL?

I know I can buy a cheap non-EV cert for my subdomain, but it seems a shame that I have to spend more money when I already have a perfect servicable certificate.

Virtually no demand for it. Adds complexity to code. No customers running this way.

If we get a customer at the enterprise level that insists, we will make sure it works, but that has not happened yet.

Running in a subfolder is supported now. Easy if you are running everything on the same set of servers. Requires forward proxying of subfolder traffic if you are not.
