The discussion revolves around the Monero Subscriptions Plugin for Discourse, developed by spirobel. The plugin enables site owners to sell recurring or one-time subscriptions using Monero, granting access to specific groups on a Discourse instance. It is open-source and hosted on GitHub, with a video demonstration available on YouTube. While the plugin has been tested on stagenet and runs on forum.monerochan.news, it is not yet production-ready due to lack of maintenance funding. The plugin leverages Discourse’s permission system for flexible content access and uses a technique to integrate a better-maintained JavaScript package. satonotdead suggests adapting it to display XMR prices in USD, similar to BTCPay, and asks about its usability and enterprise readiness. spirobel confirms the plugin already supports USD-to-XMR pricing and is working on improvements. Lilly emphasizes that enterprises—not current users—should fund development. The conversation highlights the plugin’s potential in a post-bank, crypto-native future, with Monero’s privacy-focused design contrasting with enterprise needs for transparency and tax compliance.
I tried this with stagenet coins and it has been running without issue on forum.monerochan.news since I created it.
There is currently no budget to maintain it, so don’t use it for production.
Because of the versatile permission system of Discourse, it is possible to use this in many creative ways to sell content / access to more productive group conversations.
If you are looking for similar solutions I am also available for consulting work. This work can be adapted for other cryptocurrencies and payment providers.
May I know how usable this plugin actually is and how much it should be improved in order to be considered at an enterprise level?
Privacy is becoming increasingly important, and I understand that Discourse community can anticipate this.
This plugin should not be funded by those who depend on the current system but by those who are building the next.
According to the World Bank’s Financial Inclusion Project, 27% of the world’s adults remain unbanked; while a further 50% remain underbanked, defined as an adult without a credit card.
Thanks for your reply Lilly, that quote was directly sent to @spirobel because we both know that enterprise usually can’t use Monero because the need to tax and be taxed.
And Monero design just don’t care about this, probably being created for peer-to-peer transactions on individuals level.
By the way, BTCPay (as described) can integrate transparent payments and allow enterprises like Namecheap to use it
I just want to know how it’s the current state of this plugin in order to focus my contributions to the more chances in Discourse to exist and/or continue existing.
Banks are going to die and not everyone will use CBDCs.
