Separate Settings for AI Bot Chat in DM/Channel/Topic

fbpbdmin proposes a feature to enable separate settings for AI bot chat in direct messages (DM), channels, and topics. This would allow administrators to control where AI bot interactions are allowed, addressing concerns about AI-generated content flooding topic discussions.

Currently, AI bots can be enabled for a persona with “allow chat” and “allow mentions” settings. However, this does not provide enough control, as AI bot interactions can still occur in topic discussions.

fbpbdmin suggests that separate settings for each type of interaction would be beneficial, allowing administrators to permit AI bot chats only in channels, for example. Additionally, implementing quotas to throttle AI-generated content could be useful.

Jagster points out that an AI persona only responds when mentioned or replied to, and that users who engage with AI in this way intend to converse with it. fbpbdmin acknowledges this and removes a related sentence from the proposal.

sam announces that the proposed feature is now complete, with a link to the relevant GitHub pull request: https://github.com/discourse/discourse-ai/pull/832

feature request:
separate settings to enable/disable AI bot in DM/channels/topics discussion

problem:
currently, for a persona, it has settings for “allow chat”, “allow mentions”.
if allow mentions, could chat with AI bot in channel, and in topic discussion.
it is not possible to allow AI bot talks in channels, but not in topic discussion…

  • allowing AI bot in topic discussion, it is useful, but the topics could be easily flooded with these AI-generated content.
  • a reply to the bot’s message triggers the AI bot to reply… this is correct behavior, but folks does not realize it even not meant to do that (should use the reply botton below there), sometimes, it just gets the discussion keep going with joking/irrelevant content.. on and on, bit annoying…

this is good and bad, good for more interactions, bad for too much AI-generated content.

proposed solution

  • separate settings to enable AI bot chat in DM/channels/topics,
for our case, like to have AI bot chats only in channels, that is fun and helpful. the content is cleared out in days…
  • “add quotas so you can throttle it even further” (@sam mentioned this in chat, he might already have some thought on this…)
  • in topic discussion, AI bot should only responses when mentioned, should not keep replying to any comment.

hope this could be considered soon, we 'd like to enable AI bot chat, but too much AI-generate content in topic discussion looks no good…
thanks…

please vote for this request, thanks !

Sure there can be separate settings, but an AI persona answers only when mentioned or reply to post is used. And if someone replies that way it means that user wants to conversate with AI. It doesn’t keep talking.
