When editing post, creating post or searching Discourse.
When the keyboard opens.
The whole screen goes blank.
On all Discourse forums I tried.
Is it the same for you?
Android 9 Firefox 142 (brand new)
I have made an MP4 screen capture:
Users reported a critical bug in Firefox for Android v142 where opening the keyboard on Discourse forums (and other sites like r6 marketplace) causes the screen to be covered by a blank white bar, rendering the interface unusable. The issue was isolated to Android 9 and 10, not occurring on Android 11, 14, or 15, and was not tied to keyboard apps or extensions. jesus2099 documented the behavior with screenshots and videos, noting the top padding bar persists even after leaving Discourse until Firefox is force-closed. chapoi confirmed it’s likely a Firefox bug and directed users to Mozilla’s Bugzilla for reporting. A workaround was found: enabling floating keyboard mode. twofoursixeight reproduced the bug in Android 9 emulators, confirming the white bar height matches the keyboard. ValdikSS linked the official Mozilla bug report (Bug 1987065). jesus2099 compiled test results across Android versions, confirming the bug affects Android 9 and 10 but not newer versions. The issue was also noted to resemble a similar iOS bug involving fixed-position elements. The bug was fixed in Firefox Nightly and later rolled out to stable Firefox for Android 143.0.3, as confirmed by jesus2099, who successfully typed without workarounds after updating.
Did this start happening when you updated to firefox v142? Does it happen in other browsers?
I think this blank screen bug is since and only with Firefox 142, as I see in my phone that it was updated 2 days ago.
And I tried Chrome browser with no blank screen bug.
I managed to upload the video, you can see that a small blank bar appears at the top of the screen.
And the bottom address bar goes up to the top, each time the keyboard appears.
Until I force close Firefox.
It seems to be what’s causing the blank screen bug on edit.
More a Firefox bug than a Discourse bug, but I don’t know how to report bugs to Mozilla.
PS. I removed my off-topic MP4 upload bug, I found the reason and work-around.
Popping up the keyboard in Discourse triggers the top horizontal padding blank bar and bottom menu bar slide up, covering the whole screen.
The top horizontal padding blank bar remains even when quitting Discourse.
You can see this behaviour in this video:
Only when I kill Firefox app that it disappears.
I will post here if I find another site than Discourse that triggers this Firefox for Android 142 bug.
If someone knows how to report them the bug, I didn’t find. ![]()
yeah pretty sure it’s a new Firefox bug.
You can report those here Bugzilla Main Page
(you do need an account though)
Thanks very much for the link, @chapoi!

Workaround: make the keyboard float.
Cannot reproduce this issue with the same version of Firefox on an android 15 tablet.
I’m going to try to reproduce this in an android 9 emulator with a phone-styled viewport. The performance was terrible for some reason, probably my tablet’s 4gb of ram, but i will try again
I tried android 9 with virtual master now, here are the results:
The white’s height equals the keyboard’s height.
So, the bigger the keyboard is, the bigger the white will be.
Thank you for reproducing!
So, it’s only in Android 9 Firefox 142…?
The Android 9 emulator didn’t reproduce the permanent top horizontal bar part of the bug, visible at 00:22 in below capture:
I suppose it’s something like that, but I wonder if other people can reproduce the issue on different android devices. as it does not happen on tablet viewports. I’ll test android 5, 7, and 11 later today
A little summary of the tested versions we saw:
This is a bug on old Android 9 or 10, with recent Firefox.
Coincidentally, they have a simultaneous similar bug (but less harmful) on recent iOS!
Same kind of websites (including Discourse) is breaking design, triggered by the keyboard placeholder.
Here is a giant top padding on the bottom keyboard placeholder, plus small top bar, while over there is a small bottom margin on the bottom bar.
So I thought maybe Firefox uses WebKit, like iOS, but no, it doesn’t seem so.
I’d like to add that this happens on the r6 marketplace too I see it when trying to edit a purchase order
The bug is fixed in Firefox Nightly and we have to wait for an update on Firefox for Android Normal. ![]()
Woohoo it has now arrived!
I’m typing this from updated Normal/Main Firefox for Android 143.0.3, without keyboard floating workaround!
