Changing a moderator's email address

One of our moderators has a new email address and the old one does not appear to be functional.

It appears trying to change the email address for a moderator starts by sending an ACK request to the old email address, which bounces.

Is there an easy way around that or do I need to remove that person as a moderator until after he has ACK’d the new email address?

This is on a discourse-hosted site, if that matters.

Remove the user’s moderator privilege, let them change their email, then make them moderator again.
