p.s. major kudos to @mcwumbly for his excellent writeup over at the Ember forum, which I completely neglected to give him due credit for upon publishing! 
His post was the foundation for the entire “Complementary Workflows” section and I even reused his apt take on “Don’t try to move the conversation over while it’s in flight” pretty much verbatim.

Great point below by @mcwumbly on using Slack with Discourse. Both that and @erlend_sh blog post have been extremely useful for my communication strategy development.
if anything new came out of the Slack chat, summarize it in a follow-up post on the Discourse topic

Ty for this post @erlend_sh ! Super informative! And giving some answer to questions i had from a long time.
In our small group we increased the use of whatsapp and as a result Vbullettin forum post collapsed.
Having moved on mobile people feel more easy and immediate to use WA.
I’ve set up a Discourse forum which is much more mobile friendly to counter this trend.
But chat is still very active and forum is quieter than i would like… (Users are still getting used to the new platform so i need more time to see the final effect!)
I would like to know if there are some suggested way to integrate forum and chat.
I see many plugins for chat platforms (not whatsapp) but it seems to me they are meant to push important thread from the forum to the chat to highlight them more.
I wanted to know if there is something to get part or all the chat and import it in the forum.
i agree that chat and forum are different mediums but i think it’s worth to integrate them better!

Me encantó mucho este post. En particular, ¿tendrías alguna referencia (artículo científico, noticia) que me ayude a respaldar esta cita? Estoy tratando de argumentar que mi comunidad [científica] necesita algo como Discourse y dejar de depender exclusivamente de las salas de chat.
¿Podría ser esta una referencia, supongo?
Pero es un libro muy largo. Esperaba referencias más cortas…

En este artículo, siguen diciendo que Discourse no es adecuado para la comunicación en tiempo real, es decir, los hilos de chat.
¿Pero es realmente así?
- Discourse maneja temas grandes con más de 100.000 mensajes.
- Discourse tiene la función “el usuario está escribiendo…”, que hace que todos sientan que es “comunicación en tiempo real”, igual que un chat.
- Se puede crear una categoría llamada “Chats” y un tema por cada chat.
En cierto sentido, Slack sería entonces un subconjunto de Discourse.
Sin embargo, al usar Discourse para chats en tiempo real, se beneficiaría de una integración estrecha con los debates en hilos y la base de conocimientos si están alojados en Discourse.
¿Estoy pasando por alto algo?
P.D.: A mi juicio, lo único que le falta a Discourse en cuanto a chats en tiempo real es la “vista compacta”, ya que los chats suelen consistir en mensajes cortos pero hay muchos de ellos.

Bueno, en futuras versiones traeremos un toque de chat a Discourse. Es algo en lo que estamos trabajando ahora. ¡Creemos que Discourse puede por sí solo unir las formas de memoria a corto plazo (chat) y a largo plazo (párrafo/tema)!

¿Qué tema sería un buen lugar para servir como lista de deseos para la función de chat?

Te sugiero crear un nuevo tema con la etiqueta #feature. Sin embargo, quizás quieras esperar hasta el lanzamiento inicial: no quiero que dediques todo este tiempo a plasmar grandes ideas solo para descubrir que ya las hemos incluido o que no serán compatibles con la forma en que está configurado el chat en Discourse.
