I have over 90GB of free space.

Is this a really old install?

Looks like the disk where discourse has the volume mounted doesn’t have this same space.

Hi @pauln

In your last topic, you mentioned you were on a very old Linode Debian 7.5 VPS.

This is an easy problem to solve if we approach this in a step-by-step manner.

To get started, please post the output of this command, so we can see a report of your file system disk space usage:

df

Also, please provide a summary of your file space usage as follows:

cd /var/discourse/shared
du -sh *

This is an easy issue to resolve. Don’t worry!

Note: We are also assuming you are preparing to move to a new VPS per your prior topic.

Here is a summary of df output

here is a summary of du -sh *

Yes, I will be moving to NEW VPS but I am trying to make a backup first before moving to new host.

Yes, I know. You are doing the right thing and a good job.

Let’s try a different strategy.

Can you make a backup successfully without including the uploads?

If so, we can simply take(1) that backup and (2) a separate tar of the uploads directory and accomplish what you want.

So, please try to just do a backup without the uploads (the middle button below); by selecting that option in the backup window; and post back.

If that fails, we will try to do the database backup manually from the command line  which is easy enough and will work, I’m fairly certain (we do this all the time and rarely restore from the UX).

Note:

Whatever you decide to do @pauln, please do not destroy your existing VPS running Debian 7.5 and Discourse until you have successfully installed another instance of Discourse (and restored and tested) on your new VPS.

It did fail as well. So our next option to do via command line?

Yes sir.

That should be fine.

Let us know how that goes or if you need more help. You will need to:

  1. perform a manual dump of the postgres discourse db; and
  2. create a manual archive of the uploads folder.

The instructions for creating the manual archives are OK in the reference above.

However, when I tested those directions just now, I could not write to the shared directory from inside the container, so I did this first (assuming your instance is app):

docker exec -it app bash
mkdir /shared/mybackups
chown postgres /shared/mybackups

and I changed all the paths to write to /shared/mybackups instead of /shared but you might not have that issue.

Looking forward to reading your progress soon.
