For some categories and tags (like announcements and new-feature ) I would like to have a view with ordering depending on the date of the first post.
Is this behaviour available already?
Looks like there is a way described here:
yoursiteurl/latest?order=created
Also there is the “latest” category showing most recent posts first but you probably already know about that.

Nice. Is this also available via user interface?
Not that I know of, but maybe the bosses can set that up to work.
Looks like a few people have asked about this, probably the team members have the answers.
Try:
https://meta.discourse.org/?tags=docker&order=created_at
Note, closing this … cause I feel like the OP is solved

Not as far as I know, it would require a theme component to add this somewhere.
Here’s the list of the available query strings:
This is a how-to guide explaining how to use query strings to get custom filtered topic views on any Discourse site.
Query Strings
Query strings are text that you can append to the end of most Discourse URLs to get a custom filtered view of topics.
Ex: https://meta.discourse.org/?status=open where ?status=open is the query string.
These can be useful for viewing a specific list of topics, creating custom links to unique topic lists, and searching for topi…
For more advanced filtering, there’s a /filter
experimental route:
We have recently introduced an innovative /filter route, enabling more sophisticated filtering of the topics list. Significantly, this marks the initial step towards a unified topic filtering language for both search and filtering. Additionally, the dedicated route for topic list filtering enhances the customizability of the sidebar, as users can now incorporate links as custom section links within the sidebar.
How to turn it on
Enable the experimental_topics_filter site settings in the admin i…

For categories you can set this on the Settings tab of the Category Wrench:
Though for tags I think you’re limited to the URL filter.

Ah, due to publishing on the fediverse the first post is not possible to be changed any more.
Here my intended edit:

These solutions are available already:

A preset for sorting can be adjusted via category configuration:
How to make this available as “filter options” via ui?

If your question is “how to make this available in a theme component”, I think it should be asked in dev .
