So there’s this reboot of ruby-forum.com running Discourse, in its early phase. There are a lot of people using it to access the mailing list archives, and they get the modal, which annoys people a lot. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen this modal before.
Is it configurable?
No, it’s a plugin or theme component.
Pretty sure it’s Guest Gate (Sign Up Popup Plugin) - which is marked as #plugin:broken-plugin, so there may be other issues on that site.

Doubtful, the author of that plugin hasn’t been seen since mid-2017.

Setting “max_guest_topic_views” to 1 (the default) is probably causing it to instantly show for everyone.
I also think that plugin’s just plain a bad idea, so /shrug
The CTA will show for anonymous visitors near the bottom of topics without blocking access to content.

Also designed it to not show until 24 hrs after your first visit, but people thought that wasn’t aggressive enough.
