Hi there. I looked to see if anyone else raised this question but didn’t find anything similar - if I’m repeating a question though, my apologies.
I’m new to Discourse but an admin. I have a user whose “about me” in her profile is filled out from her end, and can be seen when you visit her account, but cannot be seen from what I’ll call the “preview” - the popup that comes up when you click on her name/avatar while you’re still in another post, it looks like her “about me” is blank.
Here’s the “about me” that is filled out and can be seen when you go to her account:
Note: I haven’t alerted her to the change I’ve made so she may well want to write something different.
You can’t display more than 2 lines (I think) because they need to fit within the bounds of the profile card.
(Note that for new users at trust level 0, we automatically suppress a lot of detail when viewing their profile for safety reasons. However if this user is not new, that wouldn’t apply.)
What’s the character limit that ensures the about me to be displayed on the usercard? Can Discourse simply truncate the about me instead of completely removing it from the usercard?
I believe that it does currently get truncated with an ellipsis. There was some weird formatting that broke that in the case above. Are you seeing the same issue?

The next weird thing is that the above renders in the usercard, but is not truncated:
…while this (without headline and list)…

I’d like to know this, too. Actually, I’d like to know what impact the trust levels have on the user card or public profile fields display – combined with or independent of the field level configuration at https://mydiscoursesite.com/admin/customize/user_fields
@codinghorror or @HAWK – I’d also like to know if something changed between Discourse 1.9 to 2.0 that caused the usercard to ignore the “Show on user card?” check box on the About Me field.
Here’s what I’m experiencing on Discourse v2.1.0.beta1 +280.
Trust level zero has virtually everything suppressed from the profile, particularly when viewing as anon. Try it yourself in incognito / private / anon mode in the browser.
Also all user pages are explicitly barred from web crawlers.
I believe the usercard about me text summary is cropped at the first paragraph break or {x} characters whichever comes first.
That’s helpful. Do you know what could cause the usercard to ignore the “Show on user card?” check box on the About Me field in the admin config like I document above?
I could just be dense right now. But it seems like leaving the “Show on user card” checkbox unchecked in the About Me field at the admin config level should guarantee that the About Me field doesn’t display on the user card. But that’s not my experience right now on Discourse v2.1.0.beta1 +280.
Did I discover a bug or do I just have the wrong expectations for some reason?
Sorry, I didn’t answer the question you were asking. If the “Show on user card” checkbox is being ignored, that would be a bug. Are you sure that the text in the image you posted comes from the About me user field? It looks like it could be from the About me profile setting. Having a custom user field named ‘About me’ could lead to some confusion.
