You have two options to achieve this now:

Advertise activity in a private category (discourse-category-lockdown)

This plugin allows you to restrict access to topic pages in a category. Topic titles will still show up in topic lists, search, user activity & digest emails. This is a great way to advertise the activity in a “members-only” category, which may charge for access. It IS NOT designed to keep the contents of the category 100% private - if someone is determined enough they will be able to piece together the content from search results. Hmm, I’m not getting the same behavior. I just tried running through the demo steps and everything appears to be working properly: demo Just to be clear, the demo on our theme-creator site is just a demonstration of a use-case. You will need to install it on your own site using the installation steps at the end of the OP.

The first will show the categories and their topics, but access to the topics is still restricted.

The latter lets you show the private categories alongside those a user can normally access, but they cannot see topics or their contents.

If you’re a hosted customer I would recommend the latter as it’s a theme component and a straightforward install. If not then consider the plugin, but only if the topic titles in your private categories aren’t sensitive.
