Question about setting up MX Records on Mailgun

I have a quick question about MX records for DNS verification in Mailgun. Will not having the MX records set on our DNS settings prevent some users from receiving activation emails? I’ve had a couple of users over the year, not get the activation email and just want to verify this before asking the guy who handles our DNS settings to update a few records.
