Why are some topics unpinned to me?

I’ve seen this more than once. Why are some topics unpinned to me, even though they have the pinned icon?

Automatically unpinned after reading?

Under Other in your preferences you’ll see Automatically unpin topics when I reach the bottom. You can also change the default behaviour for all users in the site settings.

Found it, thanks.
What’s the purpose of this setting?
If things are pinned, isn’t it the whole purpose that they stay at the top?

I also noticed 2 similar settings in the All Site Settings:

What’s the difference?

automatically_unpin_topics defines whether you want this feature on.

If on, it will add a checkbox in the user’s preference to override this behavior.
(Preferences → Interface → Other):

default_topics_automatic_unpin sets the default value for that user’s option.

I agree that the description could use some more clarity.

There might be cases where it could be useful, but most of the time there’s no point for a pinned topic to stay visible all the time if we have read it and the information it provides was registered.

I use some old-school forums (phpbb and vbulletin) that have a handful of useful pinned topics I’ve read years ago, and I’m so unhappy they constantly stay in my face that I use a custom client-side CSS to hide them (plus the whole thing takes lot of room that could be used for regular topics, especially on mobile).

I’m happy about Discourse’s choice regarding pinned topics behavior, as it makes more sense in every ways.

Thank you. It makes sense now (even though, it doesn’t the way it’s written haha).

Oh I see.
Yes, if it’s something that you already know, it’s just there being annoying.
I think that maybe the best alternative to this would be to have an option where the user could manually unpin topics. For example if there are 2 pinned topics, but only 1 annoys the user, they could unpin that one, but leave the other one intact.
Maybe one is more like an announcement, but the other one contains useful information that is good to revisit from time to time?

But at least I understand it now. Thank you!

Users can click the pin icon to toggle the pin status

(Yes it’s not obvious)

I’d say bookmarks serve this purpose :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh that’s great!

And I saw this as well, which is probably a bit more useful and obvious, inside the topic itself:

But bookmarks can become a bit messy, I think. At least when you are inside a category, if it’s something important and it’s pinned, you know where to find it. Now if you have 100 bookmarks…
Unless there’s a way to create categories for bookmarks to keep the organize? Or folders? Similar to how Facebook and Instagram allows collections of saved posts.

There is no way to do this. Only a search field.

I encourage you to create a Feature topic to suggest this, if a topic about such a think doesn’t already exist :+1:

Now I think about it, you can set a custom title on your bookmarks. So you can put a keyword inside that will help organize them through the bookmark search feature.

I just did. There was another topic from 2018 asking for the same thing.

Thing is, you need to remember the title of ALL your “collections”, which is not ideal. On Instagram, for example, I can just hit Save and it will show me all my collections. I don’t have to think about any names. They are just there in front of me. Easy and fast.
