504 AUTH command used when not advertised

I’ve just installed Discourse on a fresh Ubuntu 20.04LTS install as per the 30 min install guide on github. I’ve setup an email account on a cPanel host I use, which I can send/receive email from. However, when Discourse tries to send the new user email, nothing is received (checked inbox and junk). Running discourse-doctor gives me the following error:

503 AUTH command used when not advertised

I’ve also tried setting this up with a Gmail and Outlook addresses with no luck either. I’ve spent the afternoon trouble shooting this with no luck. Any thoughts?

The easiest thing is to use one of the recommended email providers recommended here. It’s a violation of their terms of service to use Gmail (and hard to configure if you use their paid email service). I suspect outlook is the same.
