Creating groups in Discourse

:bookmark: This guide explains how to create groups in your Discourse community.

:person_raising_hand: Required user level: Administrator

Groups in Discourse allow you to organize users and manage permissions. This guide will walk you through the process of creating a new group on your Discourse site.

Access the groups page

There are two ways to access the groups page:

  1. Find the “Groups” link in the left sidebar. The link is always visible when in an admin area, otherwise it will be under the “More” section.

  2. Add /g to the end of your site’s URL (e.g., your-site.com/g)

Create a new group

Once you’re on the groups page, look for the :heavy_plus_sign: New Group button in the top-right corner of the screen. Click the button to open the group creation page.

Configure your group

On the group creation page, you’ll see various options to set up your group:

  • Group name
  • Full name
  • About
  • Visibility settings
  • Membership settings
  • Mentioning settings
  • And more

Fill in the required fields and adjust the settings according to your needs.

Create your group

After configuring your group, click the Create button.

Additional resources

For more detailed information on group management, including how to configure and use the groups feature according to your use case, see these other how-to topics: Latest groups topics in howto - Discourse Meta.

If you are new to Discourse, these two topics will be particularly helpful:

  1. How to set / configure private / closed group access, membership and visibility: This helps you understand how to create private groups and membership groups.

  2. How to set and use group mentions and messages: This helps you understand how to interact and engage with a group using mentions and group messaging.

  3. How to create private categories using category security settings: This is a more advanced setup that shows you how to use the category feature and groups in Discourse to create private sub-forums within your larger forums. These are like private channels in Slack and Discord.

Sorry, but could you make a guide for the latest version of Discourse? I’m having trouble making individual groups in my forum.
Thanks!

Welcome to Meta @JellyForums

This guide is still up to date albeit the first image of the old hamburger menu has changed to a sidebar.

Just append /g to the end of your sites url which will take you to the groups page. Then in the top right corner there will be a ‘New Group’ button and you’re good to go from there
