If you are admin and you want to set the default homepage to something other than categories, you can run re-run your setup wizard, like Hawk said. Or you can also change it in the admin - all site settings - top menu ordering. The menu item at the top of the list is the default homepage (you can also add and remove the nav bar items there too). For example, on Meta, the default homepage is /latest.

If you are a regular member of a Discourse forum and want to override this and change your own default homepage, you can do it in your preferences - interface - default homepage setting.
