Good news! We have now added the invite link to the sidebar on all sites, and selecting it opens the invite popup directly. The link is only shown to people who have permission to invite.
Sites can customize the placement of the invite link or remove it entirely using the “Customize this section” option, which is found under the “… more” menu.
You can also add link to the popup directly from anywhere using the https://yoursite.com/new-invite URL.
This change comes as part of a handful of tweaks we are making to the invite system. The goal is to make it quicker and easier to get to the invite popup and copy the link to share, while also not taking away existing functionaltiy to the greatest extent possible.
Let us know if you have any feedback at all or questions!
Sorry about that, Patrick! Localization always follows new feature development. We’ll get these new interfaces translated into french and all other supported languages soon. You can help make it happen faster by contributing to translations.
I don’t admin it on my own on the technical end, but since the Dashboard/Notification informed me of this new change, I assumed this feature is already implemented… maybe it isn’t
no, had to add it manually… so I am guessing the update isn’t live yet but for some reason I received a notification informing me of this new feature (the other being the new about page)
Well, TIL [1]! Turns out these items are updated automatically on a daily schedule, and not when code is updated. I did not specify the release which we usually do, to make sure we only announce new features when they are rolled out across our hosting.
I’ve now specified the release and so the two items I added (this one and another announcing the newly redesigned about page) will be removed for now. Sorry about that!
TIL (Today I Learned) ========================= TIL is an internet slang abbreviation that stands for “Today I Learned.” It is often used to express that someone has just discovered new information or gained knowledge about something they were not aware of before. In the context of this conversation, the speaker is using “TIL” to indicate that they have just learned that the “What’s new” items are updated automatically on a daily schedule, contrary to their previous understanding. Hi, when people click on this link, for example if it’s shared on social networks, what’s the difference with normal manual registration without clicking on the link?
Depending on how your site is set up and how you hope to grow your community, invites may be more or less important. For instance, if your site is invite only then there is no other way to get in! Or you can create links that add people to specific groups to give them access to secure categories, or to a higher trust level the first time they log in. You can also create invite links that send the invitee straight to a specific topic.
And also you can reward people who help to grow the community by giving them badges when they invite others. Also, you can see who invited a member on their profile.
More info on how it all works is in the documentation topic:
Thanks very much, it makes sense. At first I thought people could get registered instantly, but that would not be possible without giving their credentials, obviously…
Here on Meta or on my Discourse sites, I used to be able to click the Invite button; paste a mail and hit the “Record and send” invite button in one go. It seems that ability has been removed since I cannot send an invite to a single email anymore.
We are planning to bring that “save and send” button back, when you select the “edit invite options” on the invite popup. For now it is not too clear in the interface but if you put in an email address and select save then it sends the email.
