Setting up a Discourse forum for production use

sysdl132 wants to set up a Discourse forum for production use, but is having trouble accessing the installation instructions. merefield suggests following the instructions on GitHub, but sysdl132 is behind the ā€œGreat Firewallā€ and cannot access the site.

merefield recommends using a local provider or a VPS with Ubuntu 18.04. sysdl132 asks for VPS server recommendations, and schleifer suggests Vultr, Scaleway, AWS Lightsail, and OVH Cloud.

sysdl132 considers installing Discourse on Yunohost, but Stephen advises against using third-party installation packages. hawm shares a link to a Discourse community for Chinese users, but merefield questions its authenticity.

riking suggests using Alibaba Cloud’s VPS offering, which may be a more suitable option for users in mainland China. sysdl132 considers using Yunohost, but has not installed it yet.

Now I want to set up a Discourse forum for production use.
what should I do? :grinning:

Follow the instructions here: discourse/docs/INSTALL-cloud.md at main Ā· discourse/discourse Ā· GitHub

oh no,I can’t visit digitalocean.

Are you behind the ā€˜great’ firewall?

It can be installed on most VPS’s with Ubuntu 18.04 offerings. Try a more local provider.

any more VPS server is recommended?(except digitalocean)

Plenty, but maybe the local regime doesn’t regard them like we do in the West, so even if they are not blacklisted now, they soon might be.

I would recommend you use something within the walls.

Perhaps a local Discourse admin can chime in.

Thanks for your answer.I’ll try another server soon.

Seems they were using Linode for a while, then …

We can’t support third party installation packages here.

That installation doesn’t use docker which is also unsupported. It appears to be for ARM processors.

You need to find a host where you can use the standard installation method.

Is that an official or officially sanctioned CDCK site, or a rip-off?

He make the community, i think he was contact someone in the @team before?

There are no officially recommended VPS providers besides Digital Ocean.

Any hosting service which provides a standard Ubuntu image will likely work using the same instructions. Some examples would be:

  • vultr
  • scaleway
  • AWS lightsail
  • OVH cloud

Depending on your ISP/city some or all of those may also be blocked. (Even if not blocked, performance from inside the Mainland will be wildly variable for your users.)

I’m pretty sure Alibaba Cloud has a VPS offering. That’s probably the first place you should be checking, and would also allow you to have servers outside the mainland in case you have an international audience.

I think I can use yunohost, but not installed right now.
