Allow groups to be mentioned and sent messages

:bookmark: This guide describes how to enable group mentions and messages in Discourse.

:person_raising_hand: Required user level: Administrator

By default, users cannot mention groups or send messages directly to them. Administrators can modify these settings to facilitate better group interactions.

Configuring group mentions and messaging

To enable group mentions and messages:

  1. Navigate to the group’s page.
  2. Select the Manage tab.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, go to the Interaction section.

You will see settings for:

  • “Who can @mention this group?”
  • “Who can message this group?”

You can adjust these settings to change who can @mention the group, and who can message the group.

  1. Save any changes made.

Mentioning groups

When users type the “@” key followed by a group’s name in the composer, all visible groups will appear in the autocomplete list. For example, groups like @trust_level_0 will show up by default.

Enabling mentions will notify all members of the group. When a user mentions a group, they will see a confirmation message:

By mentioning @group, you are about to notify 2 people – are you sure?

:warning: There is a safeguard with the max users notified per group mention site setting, which defaults to 100. If a group with more than 100 members is mentioned, no notifications will be sent.

Sending messages to a group

To send a message to a group:

  1. Compose a new message.
  2. In the recipient field, enter the group’s name (ensure the group allows messaging).

This will correctly link the message to the group.

Improved group pages

The mentions are tracked in the database, allowing them to be displayed under the Activity > Mentions section of the group’s page. For example, mentioning @trust_level_0 will list the mention in the activity section for the trust_level_0 group.

Best practices

  • Use mentions sparingly to avoid notification overload.
  • Limit group messaging access to relevant members to prevent spam.
